Access to Clean Water

The Project

Our esteemed mission is to promote the availability of clean and potable water in the five provinces, particularly in remote areas where access remains limited. We aim to enhance existing infrastructure in rural communities to provide standardized clean water for all, utilising a sustainable cost-recovery model.

The Input

Only about 57% of Sierra Leone’s population has access to safe water, leaving 43% reliant on unsafe sources.

Limited Access: 43% of people use unsafe water.

Rural Challenges: Rural residents often depend on hand-dug wells and surface water.

Sanitation Issues: The country faces significant sanitation problems, with many practicing open defecation.

Unclean drinking water causes widespread illness, especially among children and families who travel miles for contaminated sources. To combat this crisis, initiatives include well-digging and partnerships to provide water tanks and filtration systems for communities.

The Outcome

Access to clean water in Sierra Leone provides numerous benefits, including:

Hygiene Promotion: Supports better hygiene practices, preventing disease spread.

Improved Nutrition: Enhances food preparation and hygiene for better nutrition.

Improved Health: Reduces waterborne diseases, especially for vulnerable children.

Education Advancement: Less time spent on water collection increases school attendance, particularly for girls.

Economic Growth: A healthier, educated population boosts workforce productivity and economic development.

Gender Equality: Proximity to clean water allows women and girls to focus on education and income generation.

Community Resilience: Enhances ability to withstand climate impacts like droughts.
